I read this book with my 8 year old son. When we started reading the book he had just started his first season of football. There were a lot of similarities that he could relate to Landon joining a team that had already existed. It wasn't easy for Landon despite loving the sport. Landon dealt with a lot of bullying for his disability and struggled with developing friendships. I loved all of the characters, especially Genieve and Landon's Mom. What a great family unit that complimented each other's strengths and weaknesses. This book is full of great lessons, both on and off the field!
I think the book is geared towards middle school age readers. It would have been a tough book for my 3rd grader if we hadn't been reading it aloud. The chapters were short and easy to comprehend. I just don't think most third graders would have the stamina to get through the 341 pages reading it on their own.
Highly recommend for sports loving readers!

I had a student lend me this book and I was nervous as it is not my usual genre. I figured it would all just be about football but there was more plot than I thought there would be. Though I wasn't super pleased with how the conflict all felt like it ended up brushed under the rug in order to win an important rivalry game.

Not gonna lie I went into this book with some pessimism...one it is based around a kid who wants to play American football. Not really my sport any more. Second it is a book written for 8-12 year olds.

The book was an amazing suprise...I love the main character Landon who is a deaf 7th grade student who loves football. He and his family move from Cleveland home of his beloved browns to New York to a huge football town. Landon persuades his parents to let him play.

None of this is extremely noteable. What is is that he is doing this without perfect hearing. He has cocliar implants that make him stick out among his peers along with his voice which is a tad off...he over comes many personal battles to become a member of the football team.

Not all of what the story has to offer but it's a slight taste...Now you will have to go buy it and read it yourself.
