Truly do not understand the hype. The action is fun, the art and visuals are cool, Denji’s (the protagonist) chainsaw devil design is amazing, but the story, character interactions, and vibe are not only lackluster, but often downright bad. I was on board with the first chapter, but when Denji’s new boss started treating him like a dog in a really bizarre, not-so-vaguely sexual, manner, it lost me. The story only got worse from there when Denji decided that his entire goal in life is… boobs. I get that he’s a horny teenager, but this is not a good, nor interesting, motivation for a protagonist. The only reason I gave it two stars was for the stunning visuals and the art direction. I will not be reading further, and I suggest that you don’t waste your time with it.

While re-reading, it's very clear how much effort was made by Fujimoto in establish the world, it's logic and making sure that the story continuity is air tight. Page after page there are drops of **very** subtle hints of what's to come.
However, for first time readers, this is nothing more than your run of the mill, horny shonen manga, with an interesting setting.
The world of devils and their public safety hunters is very well designed, even though it will be expanded on much better in later entries of the series.
The pages with Makima and Power are standouts, as they are both stylistic and faithful to their overall characterization. There is also a beautiful page of a train with some amazing composition.
I cannot, however, give it more than a 3 starts, as for now it is still a very generic shonen.

I have many thoughts about this series and this individual volume, but for now, I'll just say this: the frank depiction of the trauma/effects of poverty and childhood neglect is one of the most visceral and relatable that I've seen in fiction so far. My childhood wasn't anywhere near the level of fucked up that Denji's was, but the financial anxiety and hyperawareness and loneliness and finding escapism in dreams/fantasies was very familiar to me.
