No es un ensayo propiamente dicho. Es un conjunto de articulos donde Vargas llosa se dedica a explicar desde su punto de vista como es que el entretenimiento ha pasado a reemplazar a la cultura. Y cuando el habla de cultura lo hace desde una perspectiva muy elevada, desde como se ha perdido la escencia de la formacion artistica y los canones o valores mas altos en la literatura o la poesia. Hay gente que tilda a estos articulos de clasistas y snobs, y puede ser que en cirtos momentos Mario sea bastante visceral en su crítica pero no le quita la razon para nada, la banalizacion de la las artes y la transformacion de estas a mero entretenimiento, dice tambien que el efecto de la lectura en esta epoca es mucho mas superficial que en el pasado entre otras caracteristicas de nuestra era.

Un ensayo de un hombre nostálgico sobre “su tiempo dorado”, en que intenta de explicar el porqué de el tiempo de su infancia ser objetivamente mejor al de hoy.
Hay varios puntos interesantes, por eso le he dado 2 y no 1 estrella, porque realmente diversas veces he parado para pensar en lo que decía, especialmente cuando habla sobre toda la nuestra cultura de estimulo y de show. Pero el eurocentrismo y islamofobia conservadorísima mezclada con esta actitud de “los jóvenes de hoy en día…” que reina principalmente la segunda mitad del libro no es algo nuevo ni interesante.

Su propuesta no muy innovadora destaca la frialdad, pasividad, anomia sicológica y atonia moral en la cultura, lo que es cultura hoy. Frente la revolución digital el entretenimiento satisface la necesidad por irrealidad, una cuota diaria de dopamina es el mecanismo predecible a la frustrada cotidianidad capitalista, dando a entender la cultura como algo banal. No puedo negarle las observaciones, aunque dispersas y poco profundas la búsqueda de diversión en todos los ambitos de nuestra vida se hace instrinseca en cada nueva generación, pero tampoco me gusta el tono equivocado que le da a este cambio, inevitablemente suena muchas veces como un intelectual pedante.

Culture that purports to be avant-garde and iconoclastic instead offers conformity in its worst forms: smugness and self-satisfaction.”
Through this damning and indicting piece of literature, Llosa argues for the necessity of culture. Discussing topics such as culture, class, news reporting, eroticism, and religion, he takes no prisoners in using other literary figures, historical events, and more to convince you why it is so necessary to maintain culture for both aesthetic, beauty, and educational purposes.
These essays are so well-crafted and argued in such a way that only illuminate his arguments--and his arguments are totally compelling. I think many of my generation would want to do away with culture, in a sense, in that culture becomes synonymous with class and hierarchy. But culture is also to do with the home, the country, and the beauty that goes along with it. With the huge influx of technology and access to everything all the time, there is more of a precedent than ever to produce content and mere entertainment, rather than something that requires thought, precision, and focus.
Llosa wants to bring culture back--even if it means estranging others. He does not mean to place one country's culture over another in a hierarchical sense, but it is necessary to view them all as different and beautiful in their own way, though there is a type of hierarchy depending on whose point of view you require.
Overall, this is a well-thought out compilation of essays, one that requires intensity and a dictionary.
