I wasn't fond of this book although my 10-year-old son liked it well enough. We loved [b:The Third Mushroom|38398145|The Third Mushroom|Jennifer L. Holm|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1524583540l/38398145._SY75_.jpg|59947087] and [b:The Fourteenth Goldfish|19156898|The Fourteenth Goldfish|Jennifer L. There were just TOO MANY CHARACTERS. With interesting but weird nicknames. I had trouble keeping track of who was who.
I also found the story slow and uninteresting.

Loved all of the charming characters in this book! There were some humorous moments when I caught myself laughing out loud at what characters said or did. The details of Great Depression life in Key West are masterfully woven into the storyline. Would definitely recommend to middle grade readers!

Really cute graphic novel. The Little Rascals meets Key West. Loved the end mater, the authors notes and photographs and how this novel was inspired by her family history.

Historical fiction. The setting is the best part. This story could not have taken place anywhere besides the Florida keys.

I was not expecting to like this one. I was almost done with it and decided to give it a two-star rating. Then: plot twist! I decided I liked a book that shared to shy away from a Hollywood ending. I was writing this review and giving the book three stars when major corniness ruined the book for me. I hate books that hit you over the head with the message and this one is a great example of why. The corny declaration at the end changed the resolution and made it feel rushed.

Read for 3rd grade book club. I found the writing a little stilted (maybe just the young audience?), but the main character was likable and clever, and I thought the portrait of these kids' lives during the Depression was believable and thought-provoking.

This small Newbery Honor book packs a punch. Great characters, tangible setting, and deep topics that are not glossed over. This is a fun and worthy read. I have enjoyed each of Jennifer Holm's children and YA books and will definitely be checking out more!
