It was the design of this book that first drew me to it. It’s one of the 4th estate matchbook editions, which I think look really cool.
The book is a non-fiction recount of the author’s upbringing, the author was a famous literary critic who was brought up in a vicarage in South Wales.
Although the book details her upbringing including the good and a lot of the bad, I feel like I just didn’t find it overly interesting or attention grabbing.
This may be because I was unaware of her as a literary critic and also of her non-fiction that doesn’t centre around her life.
I thought it tied up nicely and shows that you can go against society expectations and still achieve.

I'd give this 10 stars if I could, I wish I had a fraction of her drive, contrariness and intelligence. Only criticism is I thought she was a little mean about her parents, especially as they were the ones who stepped in to care for her baby

Autobiographies are so often vanity projects that take far too much interest in a dull subject, however this one is very much an exception. Lorna is not claiming to have lived an extraordinary life but she has lived her life, and in her elegant, witty and descriptive writing style, it leaps off the pages and burrows deep inside. I found myself truly emotional and concerned over people, places and predicaments that happened many many years ago. She isn't just telling you what life was like for her growing up as a "strange" child in a post war world, she is making you understand that it was real, that this all happened, that she felt every word in reality. This is one of my grandma's favourite books and I'm really glad I've read it so I can talk about it with her.
