This was a reread for me so it was nice to dive back in and be able to just enjoy the story, rather than constantly comparing it to the original like I do when I’m first reading a retelling.

This book looks at Meg and Jo when they’re in their adulthood, although still a little bit rudderless and facing some big changes. I love how it explored how women sacrifice for the sake of the family, although at times it felt a little heavy-handed. It was incredibly clear that the reader was meant to understand that Meg was martyring herself, but every time she came close to realizing it, she just backed away and at a certain point that got really frustrating.

Jo is reimagined as a food blogger, but while writing is clearly still her thing, it’s clear that she doesn’t have the passion for cooking or food that she wishes she could have. She’s wonderfully dynamic as a character and Kantra does a really great job of capturing her character’s original spirit but transporting it to the 21st century.

The story also does an excellent job of setting up the sequel, Amy & Beth, with conscious nods to what they are up to as characters.

I do wish that there had been some more character development earlier in the story, rather than it feeling quite rushed in the last few chapters, but all in All, Meg & Jo is a delightful retelling and adaptation of the original Little Women and I’d highly recommend it for anyone who is looking for the feel of classic characters with a modern twist.
