I consider this mandatory reading. The format and diction take a little getting used to (especially if you are fresh off of reading H. G. Wells like I was) but the story told within these pages is truly remarkable. This book deserves every bit of fame it has in pop culture. Celie deals with getting the boot of life in every possible way with such resilience and simple matter-of-fact thinking it's hard to tell whether it's inspiring or concerning. I mainly recommend it for it's commentary on society and race that's present but not heavy-handed enough to come off as "preachy." Walker portrays a fair and mostly unbiased (it's pretty anti-men but given the protagonists plights it's more than understandable) view of humanity that I think a lot of people today would benefit from considering.

solid 4.5 stars.
it was raw and blunt, emotional and hard to read at times but it was filled with so much passion and strength. highly recommend.

I love the style this is told in. First, through letters to God, then through letters between the sisters. You really see the growth of Celie through the letters. Both in the writing itself and her thoughts. She really comes into herself, though she never loses the steadfastness and hope she has. It is slow at times, but that is just a beautiful part of the writing.
