Read for library bingo.
I enjoy historical fiction, but this was a little slow moving for me.
I enjoy historical fiction, but this was a little slow moving for me.
I've been enjoying these books as quick and easy summer reads. A few things have bothered me. They don't seem well researched. Bess is constantly home on leave, and there doesn't seem to be any shortage of petrol for all the motor cars everyone seems to be zipping around in. I don't recall any references to rationing either, just a general shortage of food. This is the first book I've actually felt annoyed with Bess. There didn't seem to be any clear reason for her to be so invested in this mystery. She got so annoyed when anyone else took an interest, like it was hers to solve, and no one else can be involved. She just came across as arrogant and narcissistic.
An entertaining read, but very complicated plot and too many different side characters to keep track of! I really like the setting and the role of a WW1 nurse, but like many other readers, I feel that Bess is actually a very flat character. After a while, it seems less and less likely she could get as involved as she does. Yes her father is an important military man, but I’ve become increasingly skeptical of the leeway Bess is given as she herself is fairly low in rank despite being a very experienced field nurse.

It's a slow and meandering series. Complex plotting and interesting historical references. I listen and so I wonder if I am annoyed with Bess or the narrator's version of Bess.
I received this as a review copy. I have read Todd's Ian Rutledge series but this is the first of his Bess Crawford series. This book was an interesting introduction to the series. Bess is a nurse at an aid station in France. One of her patients appears to be French but in delirium he speaks in German. -- Who or what is he? Bess can't contain her misgivings and when she is sen t to Paris to recover from a wound, she sets out to discover who he is. The story takes you through war-torn France, from Paris to the countryside and back. Who is this mysterious Frenchman -- read the book to find out.
