Typically I can read a book in 1-4 hours, depending on the length. This book took me two days to read. I had to keep setting it down, out of sheer frustration with the beginning of the novel.

There was such a disconnect between the first little snippet, and then the perspective shifting. It frustrated me not to have a solid explanation for the characters paranoia - there were a few references to 'a event', but nothing truly solid, unless I completely missed it? It wasn't until I got to the last segment of the book where it switched to the events on the Reservation, that I was actually able to enjoy the book, and the events of the story really started to make sense for me.

Maybe this will be a book that I will go back to and re-read sometime soon...

I found the interconnected stories of this group fascinating, observing how each trauma and misfortune seamlessly flowed into the next. I have been trying to finish this for the last year, picking it up and setting it back down, but I'm glad I persisted because the slow-burn horror Jones creates is delicious. By the end, I was horrified at how scary an elk can be.

Am in a reading slump and couldn't get on with the writing style.

It’s just slow and I’m not a fan of the writing style. The exposition is clunky and difficult to get through, and I’m just not interested enough to keep my eyes on the page, even though I know I haven’t reached the meat of the novel. I have started and stopped multiple times and it’s just not for me right now
