A grisly parable about inter-generational harm, particularly the harm men can do to women without meaning to. It’s a touch gruesome for me and some parts are hard to get through, but the writing style is vivid and really unique. Im not Native American so I’m sure there’s a lot that went over my head and I can’t speak to, but from an outsider perspective I think it was pretty well done!

My only thought throughout the book was good for her.

this was a bit of a challenge for me, particularly in the beginning. i found the writing in the beginning hard to follow with a lot of run-on sentences and just confusing wording. there was also a lot of very descriptive body horror, gore, and particularly hard to read animal death that made me seriously question if i wanted to continue reading or not - or if i even could bring myself to. ultimately, though, i pushed through and found the story to be a compelling one of revenge, grief, and the tale as old as time: what goes around, comes back around. again and again and again. i don't think this one was totally for me though, but the concept was there.

I found the story overall really good and interesting, but I felt like the writing style really ruined this book for me. The pacing was off and some sentences and paragraphs were impossible to follow which meant action would happen but I’d be confused about what actually happened. Especially in a book where reality is questioned, I found key events were not well described. I loved the family and friendship dynamics, the basketball and native culture, but some bits dragged and some were just plain confusing.

Overall I feel like it was a really intriguing premise but between the pacing and the writing it wasn’t all that enjoyable to read.
