The Title/Cover Draw:
The pink cover was very sinister looking. I was immediately drawn in and had to read it.
What I liked:
The story kept moving at a good pace. I felt for Hannah throughout the entire book and that is the mark of a good writer. The book was mysteries, revealing the right amount of clues over time.
What I didn’t like:
Wished we had more background on Stuart and Fae. There were certain statements made about them from other characters and I kinda wished there was more about them to really propel me to my own conclusions.
What kept me reading:
So many mysteries are here to unravel. Basically you want to know what happens to 4 different characters over the course of at least 17 years.
The Characters:
Hannah is an unreliable narrator, but she is sympathetic in so many ways. You just want her to solve all the disappearances so she can find true happiness.
The Ending:
The story wraps nicely with a few things left open ended. To me it wasn’t as frustrating, but be warned that this book is not wrapped up unquestionably.
Consider if you like:
Do you like mysteries where you are given enough info to solve it but still like the ride? READ THIS ONE!

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. Received from Netgalley.

This is a pretty decent run of the mill thriller. I liked the creepy house vibes though.

It took a bit to get into it but once I was in, I didn’t want to put it down. While it was a great book, and had a strong lead into a plot, it fell a bit short with the ending for me. But still a good read.

The novel opens with a chilling prologue, a murder from Hannah's past. We're thrust into the present as Hannah receives a call about her estranged aunt's fatal accident. Forced to return to the haunted Brackenhill mansion, a place brimming with repressed childhood memories, Hannah is accompanied by her fiancé. Upon arrival, however, they learn her aunt is dead.

Driven by a past she fled 17 years ago, Hannah's initial instinct is escape. But duty compels her to stay and confront the secrets locked within the family castle: an eerie, suffocating monument to buried truths.

Memories resurface - the chilling disappearance of Hannah's sister, Julie, and recurring nightmares filled with a shovel and a hidden something. Aided by this "mental shovel," Hannah delves deeper into the family's dark history. The seemingly accidental car crash that claimed her aunt's life begins to reek of murder, leading Hannah to suspect a sinister plot targeting her family.

This fast-paced, gripping story unfolds with shocking twists, some predictable, others masterfully surprising. Despite her flaws, Hannah remains a relatable character. As the layers of the past peel away, empathy deepens for both Hannah and the sister she lost.

This book was gripping from beginning to end. I feel like it was slightly predictable, but her writing is so Atmospheric that you just sucked in and don't even really think too much past basic piecing. I felt a ton of emotion and feel that it is fantastic!

Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for a free galley of Girls of Brackenhill in exchange for my honest review. I definitely was intrigued from the very start with the line "I didn't mean to kill her..." I enjoyed the dual timeline, the atmospheric writing the made it quite easy to be drawn into the spookiness of Brackenhill, a creepy castle-like estate isolated in the Catskills. Unfortunately, I am not a ghost story person and just couldn't buy into the whole haunted house premise. I should have paid better attention when requesting because no matter how hard I try, I just don't enjoy suspense/thrillers like this. The book also left me with questions resulting in the book feeling a bit unfinished in my opinion. I think there are plenty of readers out there who thoroughly enjoy this genre and will love this book, however, I'm sadly not one of them.
