Great fun. Quirky and humorous. I think my only mistake is realizing this is one of the final books in a series. I should’ve started from the beginning. I think I’ll go back and remedy that error.

Read this as a result of hearing the BBC Radio play. Was much more enjoyable to read than I thought it would be!

I listened to the audio adaptation of The Brightonomicon. I recommend it -- silly, surreal, strange. It's like the Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy on acid.

I finally had to give up, I made it about 30% through. The first 4 "zodiacs," and it was just so unenjoyable. The same tired jokes over and over. Rune doesn't pay for anything, haha, Rune hits people with his stick, haha, Rune eats all the food, haha. Funny the first time, maybe, not funny the 5 time, nor the 20th time.
Disappointing really because I really enjoy his Brentford series, and the characters therein. I thought this would be a continuation but it seems to be a entirely new story with a new set of characters, entirely unlikable and entirely forgettable (ha, see, I can make jokes too).

This was my first Robert Rankin book so I was curious how I would like it. I hadn't heard a LOT about him but the cover looked fun and the title was ridiculous so I thought it would be fun.

It was so much fun at the beginning that I had to start over and read it with/to my woman. We both agreed it was hilarious but that this kind of comedy gets old so the book would have been better if it was shorter. There were many groan inspiring puns and repeated gags and that's okay because they were funny sometimes, but after a while they were just kind of annoying.

So while I wouldn't put Rankin's level of funny in the ranks of Pratchett or Adams this book was still enjoyable for the most part and I'd be willing to try another.

I mostly found 'The Brightonomicon' funny, surreal and engaging but my enjoyment was ultimately limited by weird, jarring sections of narrative where the tone slipped from playful to being quite hateful (towards women, towards homosexuality...). I think they were meant as jokes, and I understand that Rankin's style is supposed to be absurd, but for me these passages weren't even intelligent - they were just cheap shots that didn't seem to fit in with the rest of the book.

"The pungent turd!"

I think that sums this book up quite nicely.

Very crazy. Hard to get through in parts cause a lot of things make no sense, but it was entertaining.
