A lot of stuff just doesn't make sense with Feyre as a character: why does she not feel any anger towards her family for treating her poorly and not appreciating her? Why does she only use her survival instincts and hunting knowledge occasionally? Why does she act like she's being held captive when they were nothing but nice to her???
But the story definitely got better in the second half, and was saved by Lucien and Rhys. I'm only giving it more than 3 ⭐ bc of those two.
Definitely a bit cheesy at times, you can definitely see the Beauty and the Beast retelling throughout, but I think it was done fairly well overall (again, if the beginning was shorter and Feyre plugged in her brain, it would have gotten like 4.5 stars)
I get the hype now, though. Im excited to see where this series goes.

Thinking back it’s somehow a bit funny, but little me was not having it.
Now I reread it and honestly, it was actually pretty good, maybe a bit overrated.
Easy to read and adventurous.
Ofc I was sometimes a bit annoyed by Feyre being told not to do something because it is very dangerous and doing exactly that 10 minutes later, but hey …. I was more annoyed by Tam.
And I know that my annoyance will only increase in the second book. :)
Btw, if you have read the book or don’t want to read it but are curious about the plot:
I recommend watching A court of thorns and roses | animated summary by TheCookieRhino on YouTube. It’s funny and sums up the thoughts I had while rereading it pretty well

Rhys is great too, and I like enemies to lovers tropes so them together would probably be more interesting. If she chooses him won’t the love of this book be for naught? She does everything out of love for Tamlin.

But as the book goes on, the better parts of her personality come out and I begin to root for her. Feyre is bold, stubborn and commits wholeheartedly to any goal before her.
Feyre’s love interest, Tamlin, is a complexity. BookTok has definitely ruined him a bit for me with all the commentary I have seen regarding his character in future books, so I may be prematurely critical. But there is nothing about Tamlin that makes me swoon (and I am fairly susceptible to book boyfriends). Besides being a nice character, there is no part of the story where I’m cheering for Tamlin or their love. Tamlin, from start to finish, comes across as fairly weak and complacent. Weak, clearly, is not a character trait I like to read.
Lucien, Tamlin’s best friend and emissary, is a character who is complex in the best ways. I am more excited to read about Lucien than Tamlin and am excited to see what the future holds for him.
Rhysand - both hate and love him. But at least he is ruthless and not weak.
Although a bit of a slow start, the plot itself is pure adventure, especially the ending. Learning and exploring the new fairy world with Feyre is an exciting journey. At times, a bit confusing - is ash required to kill a fairy? How can Feyre kill fairies without using ash in certain situations? I definitely got caught up in some of the confusing details. But overall the story unfolds relatively seamlessly.
The ending is what made this book worthwhile, and everything comes together in an amazing way. This is definitely the kind of book you re read just to recognize all the foreshadowing and details missed.
All in all, I’m definitely very excited to continue on through the rest of the series.
