This book is so great!
I can't wait to use it for a book study on prayer - and the importance of the Daily Office for patterning a life of prayer.
The writing is so accessible and light - while touching such a deeply important subject!

A book about daily prayer - primarily the daily office. Honest, "keeping it real," and confessional - Robert Benson writes about his striving to pray daily, and the ways it has enriched his life as well as tripped him up. He honestly shares his struggle with depression. I liked his practice of keeping colored "check boxes" on his calendar, to motivate himself to do the little daily things (like prayer) that he wants to texture his life - including writing. A simple book that touched me a great deal.

A marvelous book that introduces us from a personal perspective to The Daily Office.

A poetic and mostly convincing (though I may have been predisposed to be convinced) case for the beauty and power of liturgical prayer. I would have been more satisfied with it if there were more answers to practical questions and guidance for those looking for ways to introduce more of this practice into their personal devotional life.

Short review: I liked this book. It was a good description of what Fixed Hour Prayers are and why you would want to do them and the background of how the author became involved with them. But as with all the rest of the Ancient Practice Series, it was almost entirely theoretical. If I am reading about Fixed Hour Prayer (and the audience is fairly Evangelical, non-liturgical in most cases) then I think there should have been more practical advice about how to do fixed hour prayers.

Robert Benson is writing about the importance of the daily office of prayer for himself and other Christians. He writes about obstacles he has faced to his daily prayer habit and his pride in sticking with this spiritual discipline. What he had to say could have been summed up in a magazine or journal article. This book is wordy, poorly organized and badly written. He also tries and fails at being humorous. Frequently he reminds readers he is a college dropout who is a professional writer. His numerous books testify that he writes for a living. His writing style reflects the work of someone who did not finish his bachelors degree in English. Someone who is interested in daily prayer can pick up one of the many prayer book resources available and skip this book.

I have learned already from this book that prayer is a major part of a Christian's life yet it seem to be placed as least important today...

This book was provided to me by Booksneeze.com to review. I have not received any compensation for this review. These opinions are my own.

This wonderful book by Robert Benson breaks down into lay terms the meaning of the Daily Office.

Really simply, the Daily Office is the ritually of daily fixed-hour prayer. According to Psalms 119, we are to rise up and praise His name seven times a day. It was because of this Psalm that ancient Christians devised the Daily Office. They believed that it was important to pray to the Lord seven times a day. These times were daybreak, before the work day began, noon, mid afternoon, sundown, before bed, and midnight.

Robert then takes the time to explain why each of these times are important and what the Christians should be focusing on as they pray and worship in His Name.

I think one thing that is important is for people to understand why they do the practices that they do. This book helps to reconcile todays modern Christian with the thinking of the Ancient practices.

Thoughtful musings on why to pray the daily office. The author is self conscious at times, which is distracting, but the book is still worth reading.
