Interesting perhaps for the historically curious or those wishing to try de Bergerac's writing. Nothing really to excite this modern reader in its own right though. I find myself so far removed from their context that I struggle to see this for the ground-breaking or revolutionary work that perhaps it was. Certaingly large parts of were deeply, transgressively heretical when they were written but cause no more than the bat of an eye. The social satire also seems a lot tamer than I was expecting, with very little detail to actually go on. We instead are treated to weirdly detailed descriptions of then-current scientific thought, making this a distinctly odd treatise. Overall, its short and I'm glad I read it, but probably wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

While in no way sorry I read this book, I have to say that I just didn't understand most of it. The philosophical questions of life have never been something I spent any time on and this book is just a reason to present arguments that, for the most part, I don't have any interest in.
