This is a sad instance where the movie is better than the book. I absolutely love the "Crazy Rich Asians" movie and I thought I would get that type of spirit when reading the books. If I had read the books first, I probably wouldn't have watched the movie. These books are not terrible and are best suited to a quick beach or airplane read but don't expect the same humor and lightheartedness of the movie.

I had already watched the film and my best friend hyped this book...
However, I just couldn't get into it... I was reading for hours and hours and felt like the story wasn't progressing... It felt like running in a single spot without going forth...
I ended up DNFing it because this book kinda got me into a reading slump.

The first book was my favorite, but finished the others to get the complete story line. Nicholas and Rachel were the characters I most enjoyed but they have lesser roles in the second and third books. Unless you really enjoy drama/copious name-dropping, it's probably fine to just read the first. The movie was good too!

It was a delightful series, I have to admit. So much so, that I am actually taking the time to review it, which never happens. Reading about people spending more money than you could probably make in a lifetime is certainly interesting, if not a little bizarre.

What I enjoyed about this series:
1. I ended up getting attached to some of the characters,
Spoiler particularly Astrid and Charlie. I was rooting for them through all of the books. Really glad they got their happy ending!

2. I liked that many story lines were interwoven, making it worth to try and remember all the characters that were introduced in the first two novels.
3. The food.
4. I am not sure how accurate the cultural aspects were, but I loved them all the same.

What I did not enjoy as much:
1. The constant brand names. While I can appreciate that the author does not just mention the well known ones, such as Versace or Gucci, and makes reference to ones that would only be known by a fashion connoisseur, it really does not help the reader to envision what it is being described. Or at least, that's what happened to me, it got tiring and I ended up skipping a lot.
2. The first book was a bit confusing to read, due to the constant stream of characters and the changing p.o.v. in the middle (or end, or any part) of the chapters. I got used to it, but it can be annoying.
3. While it's an entertaining read, it is not a literary masterpiece. Kevin Kwan had a lot of great ideas but the delivery was not incredible. It is the sort of light reading you do after finishing a mentally taxing novel or while you're relaxing at the beach.

All in all, it was fun!
