I will read, listen, and review pretty much anything Sean McIndoe writes, unfortunately. Along with Jeff Marek, he's probably pretty high up the list of men whose opinions I listen to way too often. And this was no exception.

With his typical Down Goes Brown wit and knack for obscure Leafs history, McIndoe gives a delightful review of the NHL, starting at its inception and ending with some predictions on a 2020 lockout, which are hilarious in hindsight. His impeccable dry humor sets this aside from just being another NHL textbook filled to the brim with statistics and awards. Rather than focus on stories that everyone has heard, McIndoe focuses on the funnier, more obscure stories that make the NHL precisely what he describes in his title. He tells a clear, chronological retelling of the NHL, with his footnotes providing frequent jokes and rare historical references to break the ice. There are plenty of underdog stories, as well as jokes and the occasional "remember when the Red Wings played against a group of prisoners?" to prove that even in his longer-form writing, McIndoe finds a way to expose new facets of old stories with the same charm and intellect that made his articles a success in the first place.

@DownGoesBrown is one of my favorite Twitter follows, he's clever and quick to react to breaking stories in the NHL. So I bought this in part just as a way to support someone who's given me tons of free entertainment.

The book was good, but it didn't live up to what I expected from him. There are some neat stories here and a few good jokes, but nothing overly memorable.
