Solid, well-told mystery with great characters. Heavy on the rape threats, though; Marta in particular seemed to exist entirely so the bad guys could threaten to rape her. I get that these guys are awful people; an act of sexual violence every fifth page isn't necessary to illustrate the point.

A good mindless read. Held my attention but not too much thinking.

Even moreso than the first Crissa Stone noir, this is a read-in-one-sitting novel. There are no wasted words. There are no wasted scenes. Nothing is superfluous. Stroby plans out crime novels and executes them the way Crissa plans heists. Unlike Stroby, who only has to rely on himself, Crissa has to relie on other people, specifically other criminals. Who was it said hell is other people? While Crissa’s plans go awry, Stroby’s novel is a pitch-perfect noir, meticulously worked out. And if I found the first Crissa Stone novel chilling, this one invests our protagonist with a tad more humanity and is all the better for it. Of course in Crissa’s world being humane and empathetic may not always be the best move, but it makes for a much more interesting story. Recommended.
