The Kill was both interesting and boring.  I found the portrayal of Paris in the 1860s to be fascinating from a historical standpoint.  The story is set in the French version of the American "Gilded Age" that would follow a few decades later.  The businessman, Astride Saccard, is the perfect villain for this story of decadence and debauchery.  However, it was Renée's character who I enjoyed the most.  Her tragic story arch was what kept me reading until the end.
Zola's style of writing can be hit or miss for me.  Sometimes I enjoy reading full pages of description about the fashion styles of the 1860s or exotic plants found in a wealthy Parisian green house.  At other times these passages drag.

I would recommend this book only to those who have read other works by Emile Zola and enjoy his style.

Très bon livre où les bases des vices et de l'intrigue des Rougon-Macquart commencent à s'établir.
