My new favorite modern day novel! So snarky and fun -- every great lesson for girls is in here somewhere. Libya Bray is an *outstanding* narrator of her own book. I adored it and will definitely listen to it again.
So much expectation, too much let down.
That'd be the easiest way to sum this book up.
From the very start, it's plain obvious that this book is all about satire. All about tongue-in-cheek. ALL. In capital.
Starting this book with high expectation, on how things will turn out, maybe a female version of Lord of The Flies. Maybe even a brutal version. Like Battle Royale meets Lord of the Flies. Something gruesome. I mean, girl fight, yum.
I had fun reading the first few chapters. But then captain obvious showed up, and ruined the dream. Everything was like... super predictable. All of the girls are Mary-Sues. The angst, the crazy bitch, the insane bitch, the lesbian, the wild girl, the I'm-so-common-I-blend-well-in-the-crowd, and many more. It's all so stereotypical. Not sure if that's what the author wanted to do, but certainly that's not what I want to read.
As the story goes, the disappointments hit harder and harder every time. Like... you know, picture any cartoon character being thrown at, from pebbles to boulders. Like that.
And the logic, oh, God, please. True distress moan here. There's no logic in this book's world. Nuff said. Every character is a secret superhero, a funny one at that! They all have hidden quirks that none of us would realize, not even the characters themselves.
I gave this 2 stars cause there's no 1.5 star. I mean, really, the only half point came from the premise. It could have been good. Like, real good!

This book was so cute! It was original, insightful, and absolutely hilarious!!! Though some parts felt like they were dragged out, it was overall a fun book to read
The themes in this were so good, fun read aswell. Lots of representation in many areas and look into sexism
Genius. I absolutely loved this book. It made me laugh out loud over and over, all while reminding me how absurd our culture of beauty is. I should mention that I listened to the audiobook, which was one of the best ones I've ever listened to. It was narrated by the author herself, and she does different voices for all the characters--often, I find this annoying, but here it totally works (maybe because I trust her to know what she was imagining when she wrote it).
Bray did a fantastic job at discussing all of the issues she does in this book. I loved her sense of humor and satire. However, there was a point where I wasn't excited to pick it up and read because I was a little tired of the satire but quickly after that there was a BAM NEW PLOT TWIST and I was excited to finish reading it. I loved the characters and how they grew and matured together.
A very fun and funny book about the power of women :)
