While this isn't so much a pictorial history as a typical photo album (and all the limitations and irregularities that implies), it serves as a nice complement to the comprehensive and highly readable book by the late Randy Shilts, The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life and Times of Harvey Milk. "The Story behind the Film" part is really just an advertisement for the film, but it is tolerable in this situation, despite how it made obvious that some of the actors were miscast for their roles in the film. Just read the Stilts book. And watch the documentary, The Times of Harvey Milk, which could be characterized as a lengthy (and mesmerizing) video promotion for Stilts' book. Actually, I thought the best part of the whole publication was Armistead Maupin's eloquent forward for the book. If you're not really THAT interested in Harvey Milk, then read this. Otherwise, go for the other material before even picking this book up.

I wish this hadn't been a "behind the making of the movie" book. Even though the first two thirds were about Milk and his life, that last third seemed somehow wrong. Perhaps a thicker book, with more about the Castro, the gay rights movement, Milk and others would have been better; putting Milk more firmly in the context of his times and issues rather than as the inspiration for the film.
