I find it amusing that Cinderella's daughter is obsessed with shoes, but what else can you expect when her own fairy tale hinges on a glass slipper, right? Outside of her shoes, Ashlynn doesn't care what she wears - which is a good thing since, if she's late, her clothes "sizzle into rags" whenever she's late. Shallow, yes, but still intrigued in the overall story. (I'm just hoping that she's not preachy about being a vegan in the books because that would be annoying.)

In this little chapter about how Ashlynn Ella lives her life we also learn about some of the special gifts she has that are only touched on a little bit in the Ever After High books. She can talk to animals, and they can talk to her, so she is a vegan. It is explained and not pushed in our faces that she is. If she is late anywhere her clothes change into rags. This is a little silly, and I’m not sure if they will eventually turn back, but honestly this is a silly little series so I’ll allow it haha. This little short brings up the question-if Cinderella’s mother died in the original story, and her father also dies after marrying a terrible woman with terrible daughters, how does Ashlynn feel about her fate? She has lived her whole life knowing that she will take up her mother’s story, and her story starts off very dark. She also mentions briefly what happened to Cinderella’s stepsisters, though I forget how Hale handled it, I do know that in the original story their fates were not happy ones at all.

We meet Ashlynn Ella, the daughter of Cinderella, who feels that she must take up the story where her mom's had left off. Unfortunately Cinderella meets an untimely demise and her princely father has remarried. Ashlynn can talk to animals and animals can talk to her back and thus the reason why she does not eat meat whatsoever. After all, who would want to eat something that can talk back to them?

I love fairytales especially those with either a retelling of the story or one with a cit of a twist to them. This book was a bit short for my tastes and perhaps it was due to the fact it was mainly used as a short introduction. I am hoping that my opinion might change later as I take a chance on reading the other books for this series.

3 stars because again, it was a little short to really get into, but Ashlynn's story made me laugh the most. She's the daughter of Cinderella and one of the few princesses who seem to be slightly reluctant to follow their parents' destinies, though for her it seems to be more because she thinks princes aren't really into the outdoorsy stuff that she is.

A couple of quotes:

"After all, one day Ashlynn would have her own unkind stepsisters to put up with in the story, which would happen after her mother's untimely death, but Ashlynn didn't want to think about that part."

That's kind of dark! But it's lightened up by this:

"Ashlynn's heart was still strangely pounding after the encounter in the woods. She shut her curtains, locked the door, and lifted her mattress, pulling out last year's Sustainable Logging Lumberjack Calendar. She flipped through the pages and sighed. Yes, the lumberjacks had chiseled jaws, warm eyes, and broad shoulders beneath flannel shirts."

Ashlynn's definiton of porn, I suppose.

I have enjoyed these prequels much more than I initially thought I would.
As with the other stories, this one follows Ashlynn as she gets ready to return to Ever After High.
There is definitely more depth to her character than in the show. I especially liked the dynamic of Ashlynn's relationship to animals and her veganism. The Ashlynn in this story is also less focused on appearance and is more of a believable character than the stereotyped version in the show.
And just like in the previous prequels, this one includes great set up for future conflict in the actual novels.
