Read this in French... and from the perspective alone, it's definitely readable and intelligible, but there's a good amount of slang terms that come in this book, so I definitely picked up a decent bit of new words from that alone. At this time, I do consider myself about a B1 in terms of reading comprehension, and this is more than fine and doable at that level.

Now onto to this first book content, we follow a girl named Esther who is at the start of this book, actually 9 years old. We see her go through a bunch of different small stories, of one to maybe three pages at most, of her life and some of her aspirations, like being a singer/dancer, of her shenanigans at school, and at home. We see her love for some of her friends and family, in particular her father, her daily struggles dealing with an adolescent older brother, to all the boys in the school. We see her being exposed to concepts like sexuality and race a bit. We see her travel, like going off to "colo", a summer camp thing.

There's quite a bit in here, mostly fun, a couple that deal with heavier subjects, but mostly fun. It does feel like when reading, as if you're hearing a little girls stream of consciousness. She's just retelling a story about what she heard or did. You see how fun, and how cruel kids can be, and its a fun read, with the exception that a couple of chapters here that may make some people say hmmm, or down right make you feel awful about what's happening to certain characters. I think those chapters do highlight and illustrate how immature kids can be though. And from what I understand Sattouf did base this comic strip on conversations with a real "Esther" a daughter of a friend of his, and her ramblings when they have a conversation of the things that happened.

Overall, a fun start this comic strip! I'll probably continue it eventually, but now I want to see his more serious work in L'Arabe du futur!
