It is interesting to read this one particular work. Mahatma tries to bring out the essence of the gita through his interpretation. He considers the battles which happened not as direct reference but rather refer to those battles as they are happening inside human. The battles are with respect to sacred vs profane, good vs bad etc.

I read this book as part of a seminary class. For this class, even though this line-by-line commentary includes Gandhi's own translation of the Gita, I had to also read Barbara Stoler Miller's translation of the Gita. I appreciated the opportunity to compare the translations. I also of course appreciated Gandhi's commentary on the Gita. I think that reading Gandhi's commentary helped me to gain a small amount of insight into how modern day practitioners of Hinduism understand this text. (I say small amount because I realize that as important as Gandhi is that he does not "speak for" the incredible diversity that exists among the more than one billion adherents to the Hindu tradition. Would recommend!

It is hard for me to relate to and understand many parts of this text - including the commentaries by Gandhi - but several parts strike me with truth like an arrow hitting the center of a target. It is a beautiful book and, together with others, will become part of my core important books.
