I had been working on a project with Cecilia for the last year. Over winter break I told her I picked up a copy and couldn’t wait to read it. I took my time reading and absorbing her words and finished it about a week before she passed. So sad to have not been able to tell her how wonderful, honest and refreshing I found her work. Forever grateful to have been a blip on her radar. Rest in power, Cecilia. Thank you for everything.

This is one of the most honest and measured books I have read. The way Gentili wrote so candidly, looking at each problem, each conflict, each memory without flinching away from the funny or twisted or awful parts of an experience, refusing to dress them up to be more than they were, is so admirable to me.

I am reminded of Audre Lorde talking about the pain that happens as a result of our silences. Faltas describes so many painful scenarios that wouldn't have happened without silence, knowing something is happening and not doing anything about it. And Faltas also finally says what Cecilia Gentili needed to say, without reserve or hesitation. These letters are a powerful example of understanding the people who have hurt us without forgiving them and accepting the past without needing to changing it. They are more than just letters to me: they are a guide, a lens and a path home.

This book is deeply affecting and brilliant. It is epistolary, each chapter is a letter addressed to a woman in the writer's small hometown of Gálvez, Argentina, some of whom she loved, some despised, many who knew she was being sexually abused as a child and who opted for various reasons to protect the status quo. On the level of language, this book is brilliant. Gentili describes the most difficult topics without shame and in clear detail, uncovering the reasons for her actions and relationships while indicting class-conscious conservative poor Catholic society. Triggers abound but this is absolutely worth reading if one can. ♥️🖤
