Tries way too hard to be weird just for the sake of being weird. That's MiƩville, really.

I wanted to love this book but instead mostly found myself being annoyed with Mieville's showing off his vast archaic (yet remarkable) vocabulary, and his talent for thinking up weird creatures and races. While the world building aspect was excellent, I really wish he'd have put as much effort in a less disjointed plot.

Complicated feelings here. Excellent, if grotesque, word building, fine prose, gripping story, etc. But also, like, a total downer, man.
