I'm genuinely kind of mad because this book has such a good concept but is so poorly executed. The author was not trained in religious studies and came to this project with zero background knowledge of Black religion in America, and it really, really shows. Even though it was published in 2018, it is filled with very dated language regarding trans people, along with some pretty borderline racial terminology. The author also has multiple bizarre, out-of-nowhere comments about various people's weight and incorrect statements about various religions. I hope someone else writes the book about this topic that it deserves.
