Friday might look like an ordinary cat, but he’s so much more than that. He’s protective of his owners Trixie, Kathleen, and Rose, and does anything within his power to ensure they live their lives the best I can. And I do mean anything. It’s always said that black cats bring bad luck, but Friday brings superstition. From lighting liars’ pants on fire to turning jealous women into green-eyed monsters, this book will keep you reading for the sole factor that you won’t know what to expect next. Plus, reading a story from a cat’s POV is definitely fascinating.

This is a surprisingly intense gift of a story based on Friday, the cat. He is always there, and instrumental in the amazing magic. It often gets quite dark, but is kept inviting and controlled due to the wise and all seeing pet. A lovely quick read for everyone who searches for the unexpected.

This one was a hard one for me as I wasn’t sure what to expect, and my expectations always guide my enjoyment or lack thereof in a book. I'm pretty sure that a 'me thing' as a reader though, so take this review with a grain of salt (esp as so many others have given it 5 stars). It reads somewhere between a collection of unrelated short stories/ flash fiction and a single cohesive novel following around a cat. Let’s back a bit though…

The cover and description garnered my attention as I love black cats, superstition, and karma. Again though, I had no real expectations as I don't read a lot of short story collections. Having never read the author before, I also had no idea on style. It is the Halloween season, and I’ve been branching out my reading choices so I gave it try...and I’m not sorry I did.

First, a few negatives to share. There are some formatting and grammatical errors. There aren’t so many that is jars you completely from the story though. The POV was a bit confusing for me at time - I think the goal was omniscient (kitty) but there were times when it seems to hop around a bit. Lastly, while I wasn’t sure what to expect, I was hoping for a bit more of a definitive connection/ explanation beyond the cat is special. It seemed to build a bit with the graphics and 'horrors' growing with each story so I started to expect a big revelation of some kind.

And now, the good parts! It’s a quick, easy read with each chapter being short. There are some great descriptions and wonderfully snarky lines which I very much enjoyed. It also appealed to me as someone who has wished Karma would move a bit more quickly at times. This book is quite unique in my experience - that could be solely because it’s a departure from my usual reading, but I prefer to think it’s because the book is actually unique! Additionally, it does very much deliver on the description of strange events, and the black cat truly was a delight.

If you’re in the mood for a bit of a strange but charming read, check this one out!
