If I hadn't read and completely loved The One and Only Ivan, this book wouldn't have had much of an impact. If I hadn't already cared about Bob and Ivan and Stella and Julia, this book wouldn't have gotten me to care about them. And that makes me sad. It just doesn't stand on its own.

I read this one aloud to my girls. They really enjoyed it. It wasn’t as good as Ivan, but a great read aloud no the less. A great book to examine trust and love after trauma and survivors guilt.

Bob (the homeless dog from The One and Only Ivan) is adjusting to life living with humans. When a tornado hits the zoo where is best friends Ruby and Ivan live, he is reunited (in a roundabout way) with his sibling, Boss, and her puppy, Rowdy.

Although it's the second in The One and Only Ivan series, readers could start with this book and not feel like they are missing out. Bob has a distinct voice from Ivan, although the format of the book is similar. Explored themes of: human resilience and compassion, regret, forgiveness, and courage.

“Maybe it’s easier to forgive others once you’ve learned how to forgive yourself.”

The One and Only Bob was the Dart selection for August and what a way to start the school year! I was nervous because it’s a little long for us, so we started reading it the last week of July — but it looks like we would have had plenty of time to read it in August! This is the second book in the series, but it didn’t feel like we’d missed too much by starting here.

This book was full of opportunities for juicy discussions. Our main character, Bob, is a rescued chihuahua mix with a troubled past. He is riddled with guilt and anxiety over his past decisions, but we are right by his side while he finds redemption and a renewed understanding of bravery.

I liked this book more than I thought I would, considering Bob was not my favorite character from The One and Only Ivan. Yet this book made him likeable after the first half and I enjoyed hearing the author speak from a dog's point of view. There was a lot of thoughtful messages. 3.5 stars.
