i liked the themes of this book a lot. the idea of a person who doesn't feel like they belong to humanity but trying to artificially assimilate, and the forced humanity the character puts to fit in ultimately fails in convincing everyone. i also found the theme of a woman who doesnt connect to her body's function of having children + sex interesting and the analysis of gender that puts forward. i read an interview of the author where she said she wished for a world where sex didn't exist, i thought the idea the author presents of when a person has no wish for children they have no use in society. i think this is a particularly poignant theme for japanese society and east asia's philosophy of filial piety.

absolutely mediocre. which is perfectly fine. this book greatly emphasizes that living a mediocre life is alright. i rate this a five star because i know so many people who live constant days doing the same exact things. even i can relate to the main character, perfectly content with the job i have and the money i earn and the things i do.
i'm fine with where i am and i feel seen after reading this book.

(second time reading)
i'm not gonna change my rating. i still very much love this book. as someone who's also living a meaningless, empty, dead-end life, this book helped me appreciate the simplicity of just 'living'. life doesn't have to be full of fireworks, parties, trips, promotions. sometimes it's just breathing, waking up, eating, going to work, and then sleeping. and that's alright. that's perfectly fine.

this is a great book if you want something you can re-read every year.

What I learned from this book: don’t change your life just to fit in with society. Your own happiness stands before anything else. People will have shit to say about you no matter what you do, so learn to live for yourself instead of for others.
