The biography of Itzhak Perlman as he grew up in Tel Aviv, contracted polio, and learned to play the violin.

Itzhak Perlman's story of triumph and adaption in the wake of polio was so inspiring. I love that the book depicts Itzhak trying his hardest to regain his strength after polio, but ultimately Itzhak made his love for music work for him and played sitting down. Itzhak uses music as his drive to regain his strength and carry on and I thought that was really touching.

The illustrations are lovely, but in terms of the actual story, it feels like the really interesting bits--Itzhak adjusting to life in America and being disabled in a society often unaccomodating to the disabled--were shoved in the author's notes instead of being the meat of the story. Wish they'd explored more of those parts instead of just a summary of his early years.

This gorgeous picture book celebrates the childhood and career of virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman, from growing up in Israel and surviving polio to performing on the Ed Sullivan show and then touring all over the world. More than a celebration of music (although it is that, for sure), this is a book that advocates for better disability accessibility as Perlman often faced physical barriers in the music halls he visited. This is a wonderful biography for young musicians and a super introduction to a famous performer.

This beautifully illustrated picture book biography shares the story of a young man with tremendous musical talent who overcame polio and other hardships to share his gifts with the world. I particularly appreciate the emphasis on accessibility and his advocacy work for the disabled.

Read for Librarian Book Group

Picture book that caused me to wonder if this is the only picture book I've seen depicting a child with polio.

I liked the colors.

This is a children’s picture book about a young boy Itzhak from Israel who is a violin savant. He becomes famous around the world for his musical abilities at a young age.
