It was a cute witchy book, I liked the premise with a magical competition and girl power with the John Tucker Must Die vibes. I didn't love the resolution between Emmy and Talia. In the climax argument, I thought they both raised points that the other should've addressed, and (for a healthy relationship) come to a compromise. Emmy was happy with her choices in the end, but honestly it felt unbalanced to me, and so Talia at the end annoyed me a little. But otherwise, it was a cute read for spooky season, and I'll be picking up the next book to find out more about Rowan and Isidora.

3.5 Stars.
While I did enjoy this book, it didn't capture me like I thought it would. Would still recommend and look forward to the next one.

spoiler free review as i wait for court to finish, but i really expected more from this book. i'm stuck between a 3 and a 2.5, but i'm landing on a 2 ultimately, because i did think it was just okay. it took me a while to get into, and i was pretty much waiting the whole book for it to pick up and it never did. i didn't feel that connected to any of the characters, and the romance didn't feel that fleshed out to me. i also thought the reason the main character left her hometown and abandoned her family and best friend was stupid??? i spent a lot of the book mad at her!

things i did love though: the small town illinois setting (maybe the first time i've ever read a book set where i grew up, kind of??), the autumn vibes of thistle grove, the queer characters, and the chicago elements!

I'll round up from 3.5. I agree with other reviews that it was a bit juvenile as romance novels go AND that Harper tries to do a lot of different things. I wish there was one additional love scene, but I dug the chemistry between Emmy and Talia. Talia is the perfect love interest for the book, while Emmy's a bit frustrating. The world is fun and as someone who lives in Chicago I liked the nods to the city.
TLDR: fun world, bi ladies, enjoyable albeit corny read
