Another enjoyable read from Kate Milford. While all the books in the Nagspeake/Greenglass House world are middle grade books but this one felt the most middle grade out of all of them. That's not a bad thing! Just that the main cast of characters was all children - and a handful of of them! But unlike in some Greenglass House books where I've confused one adult character for another, each of the characters in this book were distinct.

Can't wait to read the next one!

Oh the cognitive dissonance of a mid-series narrator switch. I understand wanting to have a female voice with a female main character (sort of. I think George Guidall does a fantastic job with the Golem and the Jinni books so it's definitely not a given), but it took me a long time to get over the new narrator "mispronouncing" the main character's name. I also thought the voices for Mrs. Pine, Emmett, and Meddy were entirely wrong and a bit annoying.

Minor narrator pet peeves aside, the story itself was an engaging, mesmerizing adventure with just enough magic and whimsy. I really enjoyed the book itself, and feel it deserves to be 5 stars. I doubt the author had any control over the narration.

It was a slow start and little top kidish but overall a nice fantasy.

Very fun. I love all of the characters but especially the protag Marzana, whose social anxiety is a major part of the plot and respected instead of a gimmick like mental illness usually is in MG. It was fun that Milo, the protag of the main series, was barely present in this one. Marzie really got to shine.

Yes love - this was super fun!! Love the way the crew got together and the story evolved. I really think Kate Milford could write some great adult mystery / fantasy books.

Maybe it was because I was taking too much time in between reading, but the book was too complicated for light reading. I know it’s supposed to be a standalone, but they reference a lot of things and drop a lot of names that are not relevant to the plot, and I was having a hard time following.

The back cover says this is a standalone and it is definitely not. I haven't read any of the other Greenglass House books and I was very confused. The pace was too slow for my taste. I got halfway through and was too bored to finish.

Even reading this as an adult, I enjoyed it. I was vaguely familiar with the earlier books, but didn't need any of that info to follow the plot or characters.
