As an Asian American who also grew up in small town Pennsylvania, I felt so seen + connected to Phuc through his raw + detailed memories of growing up trying to find his place in the world. And constantly seeking love + approval from his family? gosh, I know that feeling all too well. This memoir was healing for me as it helped me understand parts of my own upbringing. It was also really fun to hear his perspective of Carlisle as I attended grad school nearby (Ship happens!)

Absolutely loved this. Extremely relatable on so many levels.
There are some content/trigger warnings to be aware of but nothing extremely graphic.

The nonfiction equivalent of Eleanor & Park (minus Eleanor, plus an author that actually has authority on the subject of coming of age as an Asian American in the 1980s)!
