3.75. Reminiscent of the novel never let you go, but for a new generation. Interesting enough that I will be reading the sequel for sure.

Every YA book I've read recently have been underwhelming and/or completely disappointing. Then I read Girls with Sharp Sticks. Oh, this beautiful and terrifyingly real book. How i love and want to protect Mena and every girl from Innovations Academy. But you know what, they don't need protection!

This story is set in a world you can believe would soon be reality. These girls are trained by men to be proper young ladies. That means being perfect at all times and knowing your place. Men in real life would definitely be on board with this premise!

But there is so much more to the story than the synopsis tells you. There are so many layers peeled away as Mena uncovers them. It's like just when you think it can't get worse or crazier..it does. No spoilers here, go into this as blind as possible! It's so good, I can't wait for the next one!

Creative premise with fun, if not bland, characters but executed in a wobbly way.

In the current climate of the country where women are fast losing our rights and our autonomy, this is a hard read. We spend a lot of time in the full misogyny of their world and it’s sufficating. I finished the book to breathe. I’m not interested in following up with the other two books.

Wow! This book was a crazy thrilling ride. The beginning was a bit slow and took a little bit to get into, but once I did I couldn’t put it down. I love Mena even though at times I wanted to scream at her for making stupid decisions. I loved the bond the girls shared and it was refreshing to see female characters loving and supporting each other. The men in this book made me see red and I hated all of them right along with the girls. I typically see the twists coming in thrillers, but I didn’t see the main reveal in this book coming. However the minor reveal with Leandra at the end I saw coming from a mile away. I now want to read the sequel. That epilogue threw me for a loop.

Frustrating start, bit of satisfaction when main character finally wakes up.
