I bought this collection four years ago because I was intrigued by An Inspector Calls but unfortunately, I was never really interested in the other plays, and thus it stayed on my shelves for years. After all these years I’ve decided to just read An Inspector Calls and acknowledge that I might never read the other plays but in case I change my mind I’m glad that I own this collection. An Inspector Calls is an amazing play and I’m glad I’ve finally read it.

The 5 stars are for An Inspector Calls only as I didn't like the others. I get goosebumps reading An Inspector Calls, and I find it an incredible and fascinating play.

It was so enjoyable reading inspector calls again as well as reading some of his other plays which I have never heard of before. Forgot how much I love reading plays....

A collection of 4 plays by JB Priestly. 'An Inspector Calls' is his most famous, and indeed his most memorable.

I had to read An Inspector Calls for my English Theatre class and, since this edition came with three other plays I thought I'd give them a try.
I found And Inspector Calls very intriguing. More than once I felt I wanted to yell at a couple of the characters while encouraging Sheila (thank god for Sheila). I loved how the moment you thought you have pieced everything together, Priestley put things upside down. The way the characters unfold throughout the acts is wonderful, both in the way they develop and the difference between the two generations present.
Time and the Conways broke my heart. I empathized in so many ways with Kay (maybe because I'm also a 21 year-old aspiring author and the Kay of the second act is the personification of one of my greatest fears as a writer.). The use of time between acts was so powerful in the development and downfall of each character's storyline. Reaching the third act knowing how everything was going to end for this family was a bit painful. Just a bit.

As for the other two plays, I found I Have Been Here Before quite intriguing but I didn't quite understant Dr Görtler's theories by the end, which made it difficult to follow through at times; and there isn't really much comment on The Linden Tree. Not the most exceptional play I've read.
