I loved this for a fantasy book this was really good the relationships and the emotions were so detailed. It made me cry sometimes and i liked ektaya and the bond between her and lhyn and the relationship with tal. I feel like crying the book was amazing  . I really liked how the concept of love and war and being on the opposite sides is dealt with

I love this book to pieces. I read it three times in 2021, and it, along with the rest of the Chronicles of Alsea, is on my list or must re-reads for 2022. This is the book that got me to fall in love with science fiction, a genre I've struggled to appreciate in the past. It's also the reason why I discovered and fell in love with Start Trek (Andira Tal and Alsea first appear in Fletcher DeLancey's Voyager fan fiction book No Return), my new all time favorite franchise.

I'm a sucker for strong, well developed characters, and there are plenty to chose from here. I love Ekatya Serrado and Andira Tal, and I absolutely adore the deep, complicated relationship that so naturally develops between them. That challenge and the aftermath? Perfection.

I'm also grateful beyond words that there are authors like Fletcher DeLancey that are capable and willing to write complex, compelling, and awesome sapphic characters in their thirties and forties. I'm an old fart, teenage protagonists just don't click for me anymore.

The Caphenon follows three women on an accidental first contact story. Andira Tal is the Lancer (political and military leader) of Alsea, where Captain Ekatya Serrado and her skeleton crew of the Caphenon, including Dr Lhyn Rivers, crash landed. Ekatya and her crew are from the Protectorate, one of two Gaian interstellar civilizations, the other being the Voloth Empire. Lhyn is a Protectorate anthropologist, and also Ekatya’s lover. Ekatya, Lhyn, and Andira have fairly equal POV time, with other characters having short snippets.

At the beginning of the book, the Star Trek vibes were strong, but I quickly got immersed in the story in its own right. There’s a good balance of plot derived action, with the Voloth Empire trying to subdue the Alseans, and utterly fun and mostly relaxed conversations between characters as they learn about each other’s cultures. Which was awesome.

So The Caphenon is the beginning if a ten book series. Which I did not know when I bought the book. But the book wraps up decently well.

Reads like mediocre fan-fic, but in a universe you don't care about.
