I love the way the two styles of illustration tell a story about illustration, plus those splashes of blue ink are just so much fun. The clean-up part of the story seems to defy the logic of watercolors, but otherwise it's a great picture book.

Blue Chicken is about a chicken who spills paint all over the painting that the chicken is supposed to be in. The chicken is just supposed to be helping paint the barn, but the chicken ends up spilling it everywhere. The chicken feels very bad about spilling the blue paint, but he tries his best to clean up the mess and make the painting look nice again. Of course, it ends up working out and it in facts look nicer after it has been spilled on and cleaned up. This book teaches a couple of great concepts for children to learn. One of these concepts would be that it is okay to make mistakes. Although making messes is not typically encouraged, in this book it is trying to convey a message that lets children know that it will usually be okay in the end. Another concept that deals with making messes would be that if you make a mess, you should clean it up. The chicken is seen getting help from some of the other animals, which encourages sharing. There are so many great things in this book, which is interesting because there are not many words within the book. It is nice because children can make up other stories within the book just from the beautiful illustrations. I would definitely read this book to children from ages 3 to 8 where they are beginning to learn such concepts like sharing and cleaning up after themselves.

This is an absolutely beautiful book! A chicken in a painting gets into the paint and accidentally turns things blue. As she tries to fix things, she instead makes them worse and more blue until she finally finds a way to get the blue off of everything and into the sky where it belongs. This is a wonderful addition to any art class and is just adorable and a fun story for children. My 9 year old daughter and 12 year old son like Blue Chicken too. Her art would be cute on t-shirts. :)

This book begins with a picture that someone is painting of a farm scene. The painter explains that the picture is almost finished and that they just need to paint the barn! A chicken decides they want to help and turns the entire scene blue! The ducks, cows, chickens, cat and the entire painting become a blue ocean. The chicken is so sorry that he finds a way to spill water in order to save himself and his friends. This book is beautifully illustrated with watercolor and the animals are simply drawn but still bring a lot of expression. I really liked that the text is short and unobtrusive because I think the real star of this book is drawing and illustration. My only worry for children reading is if they would be confused as to what is happening because it is unconventional having a chicken come out of a picture to spill blue paint. I would recommend this book for children in Pre-K to 3rd grade. The Pre-K kids may not fully understand the story but I think they will love the illustrations and animals.

I haven't seen Inception but I suspect this book is like Inception as a picture book, only with art, not dreams.

Beautiful water colors. Fun, whacky story. (The chicken was only trying to HELP!!) Might help children begin to identify colors, especially (can you guess?) blue.

I wouldn't be surprised if this came away with a Caldecott honor, although I think it's a bit of a dark horse.
