I Am Smoke is a picture book written as an extended metaphor about smoke. Both the writing and the illustrations are gorgeous. The writing is based on how smoke can harm as well as heal, scientific uses for smoke, and cultural uses for smoke throughout history.”

I really love this beautiful book and will definitely be bc using it as a mentor text for my students - perhaps team up with their science teachers for ideas.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a beautiful book with poetic language as well as parents and teachers looking for books to inspire children.

The author's note at the end adds new meaning (riddles). Such an interesting way to think about poetry. Lots of possibilities with this book.

An interesting approach to nonfiction, with a main narrative told by smoke itself, describing all things it is and is not. Afterward, the author adds more detail and resources.

Mercè López has done amazing things with these illustrations -- she used actual smoke to create patterns on paper, and then developed each spread from there. All of the visuals are simultaneously detailed, and obscured by the smoke.
