Book #1 of Icewind Dale. Book #4 of the Drizzt saga.
Classic DnD type Fantasy series.
I have read the Dark elf trilogy which was the prequel to this series. This series publication was actually the first. I decided to pick it up and continue my journey into the world of Drizzt as written by Mr. Salvatore. If you like dungeons and dragons adventure stories this is a good one. It also makes me think Tolkein with simpler wording and less descriptive tangents, though there are still some.
I enjoyed the adventure and the world and characters beginning to build here. There is a lot of fight scene, war and death in here. I was a little lost at first with the who is who and what is what. Once I got into it though it moved pretty quickly. Though the overall series has Drizzt as the MC and he was an impactful part of the story, I felt that Bruenor jumped of the pages in this one. Wulfgar also is a big part of the book. These are set up as companions of Drizzt. A good start in getting to know these characters, the different races, and building this world.
If I had not read the Dark Elf Trilogy prior to this, I don't know that I would understand the Drizzt character as much and I feel I would have been a little lost on what he is about.

I did not finish the book. I couldn't bring myself to complete the whole book. Don't get me wrong, I love RA Salvatore's work, but his first book Crystal Shard was boring. Decided to skip the whole Icewind Dale trilogy and moved on to Drow Legacy. Guess what, it was way better!

Most people start here when reading Drizzt novels, which is understandable. It contains all the well-known companions, and is where we first see how the different companions are shaped by their own lives. It's a great book, though not my favourite in the Drizzt series.
