Brunetti Entre Les Lignes by Donna Leon

C'mon, you knew this would be a formula book, so don't complain that it is.

I've skipped ahead here from early Brunettis, but not much seems to have changed.

This time, Leon wants to rant about cruise ships and art theft, and she's built a story around that.

There's less than usual about Paula's food and their kids, but I'm OK with that.
There's the usual repetition of Leon's obvious wish to have been a police boat pilot rather than an author, but I can totally understand that.

The plot resolution is unusually rapid, and goes much too easily to things that were hinted at so broadly that most readers probably thought, "well, THAT obviously isn't it."

I can't imagine enjoying these books if you've never been to Venice, btu I can't imagine not enjoying them if you have.

The main draw of this book is the descriptions of Venitian life, which are lovingly detailed. The family meals, the walks, the pubs, and the concerns of tourism and corruption all offer a sincere look into what it is like to live in Italy, The mystery itself feels more like an afterthought, a way for the character to discuss what his life is like.

Agree with the person who said it finished so abruptly she thought her e-copy had missed downloading the end - I have a hardback copy and I feel it's missing a chapter. You find out who did it and that there's the evidence they needed, but nothing about starting to arrest him or wrapping it up with thoughts on people.

Wordy and a bit meh. A slow start but then I got a bit more into it and the setting in Venice is of course lovely, but all in all it was just not for me. Favourite character: Paola
