I was so excited to read this one after Two Girls Down, but found that there was very little character development since the first one. Vega and Caplan continue to dance around each other without really earning the bonding that is implied in their partnership. I want to love this but found that it just went on and on without much happening. I would give the third book a try in the hopes that it will finally reveal the partnership that was hinted at in Two Girls Down, but after that if things do not improve I will stop reading. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I continue to love Alexa Vega and Max Caplin books however this one was a bit more needlessly violent than the last

I wish I could remember what person, podcast, or website suggested this book. Whoever it was deserves a BIG thanks from me. I totally enjoyed this book and am going to go back and read the first book in this series. Best crime-drama I’ve read in a long time.

Book two of the Alice Vega series. The titular Janes are two unknown young Mexican girls found dead, apparently murdered, along with others like them who are being trafficked as soon as they try to emigrate.
Again we're dealing with a situation where underage girls are being bought and sold, which is gross. We're also dealing with drug lords. The plot is incredibly complex and although it doesn't drag at any point, there's a lot that feels like "i am writing a six-part miniseries and inventing ways to keep the watchers riveted". I guess I felt the book could have been two hours shorter and still been satisfactory, not to mention less complicated.
This author has this thing of using a word that is similar to a more accurate word, like dissipated instead of dissolved, which I find a little jarring.
I didn't hate it, and I definitely plan to read book 3, because the characters are solid and I like them (and also because book 3 appears to NOT be about pedos and sex traffickers, barf).

Really solid PI procedural. Very procedural, to the extent that you know the shape of the mystery early on and the later plot points are basically just nailing down details. But it’s well written and with good enough characters that I didn’t mind.

This is the second Alice Vega novel and I was really looking forward to it because I absolutely loved Two Girls Down. I didn't have the same feeling about The Janes, and I am disappointed. I just couldn't get into this one, possibly because it seemed so complicated, and far-fetched. I love that Alice is very intuitive and can sense what is happening, but some of the storyline/plot development just didn't ring true for me.
This is the story of 2 girls "The Janes" who are found dead with some distinctive marking. Alice and Cap are brought in as consultants by the San Diego Police Dept and the DEA to try and solve the murders. Alice and Cap discover a bit of troublesome dealings within these organizations, and are also blindsided by what is happening to girls who are smuggled into the US and sex trafficked.
While the issues are real, I just didn't believe the storyline.
I hope the next Alice Vega story holds my interest more.
Thanks to Edelweiss.plus and Doubleday for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
