Ant is such an endearing character. Although her parents come off a little harsh, I'm sure the exaggeration isn't totally unrealistic. You really root for her and want her to be understood for the bright, unique child she is.

I am amazed by the lengths Ant went to for her dog, Pistachio.

Truly insightful and kind, Choldenko brings such empathy and care to the story of a girl who loves others more than herself. How is it connected to lying (enough to lose trust)? How far does it go (into a lion's cage)? Lots and lots of surprises and, yet, that makes it more real.

I only finished the book because my daughter had read it and wanted me to read it. I liked it by the end, but found all of the characters very unlikeable (except the art teacher).

I really adore this book. Alternately painful, funny, and lovely, this is a great coming of age book for kids who are having to grow up earlier than ever.

Trying to keep her little dog Pistachio safe (seizures), family doesn't get her, trouble at school. Volunteering at zoo.
Smart Alec: Principal: "What would the little boy who cried wolf say?" Her: "Nothing, he's dead."
Lying.

This book was aweful. I highly advise that you steer clear of it if you have the choice.

A hearbreakingly honest portrayal of a young girl who feel like an outsider in her own family.
