I really liked this book even though it was for school. I really liked how each chapter or every few felt like a mini vignette. There was a new story every time, not linear, which felt very realistic to the war memories it recreated. It was very emotional and reflective and I really liked how we saw the good but also the negative aspects of war and everyone’s character because that is the reality of humanity.

This book was picked for my book club. I really tried to give it a chance even though I hate media about war.

BUT I knew I wouldn’t be able to tolerate it when the whole first chapter is this guy’s internal monologue on whether the girl he likes really is a virgin or not. Maybe I’m just sensitive and don’t love reading about literal war crimes but the author’s attitude seemed almost aloof when describing the atrocities he saw. The attitude I got from it was “its a war and things are different in war and the same rules don’t apply.” Maybe his attitude would have changed had I read further, but I wasn’t interested in finding out.

War time atrocities aside, I cant even say this book was well written. I found it extremely repetitive and pseudo intellectual.

This is the first time rereading this book since high school. Even though I feel as though it's missing some of the first read magic for me, it still holds up. Definitely a must read.

read for school and it’s probably a much better read if intrinsically motivated! i struggled to get lost in the book due to the short story format. brilliant job of addressing topics of moral ambiguity, truth vs fiction, and what war can do to a person.
