Harrowing yet gorgeous. This book blends the line between reality and story so strongly that I still don't really know what happened to O'Brien and what didn't - and I also don't think that's really the point. This is a meta book, as much about how to write a war novel and the fantasies we tell ourselves as it is about the Vietnam War itself. Hopeful? Perhaps, if survival itself is hopeful. I feel like that's almost an insult to the platoon, though.

I had to read it for school. Overall a pretty good book, especially if you enjoy historical stories. Some of the chapters were super long but the writing was good. The descriptions were also very….. descriptive to say the least

I know cruelty was a part of the Vietnam war, but one particular chapter featured extremely unwarranted violence against an innocent, and it was very hard to read. It got its point across though, absolutely.

THIS BOOK WAS LITERALLY INCREDIBLE. probably one of the best books i've read for school. First chapter definitely is a little weird with the way the narrating character speaks about women but it kinda makes sense later on? like it's still like. bad, but it's also the author being honest about the way some of the people he knew spoke about women and i appreciate that. I love how it absolutely refused to pull any punches. Also 10/10 metafiction. The end made me cry.

This is the first time rereading this book since high school. Even though I feel as though it's missing some of the first read magic for me, it still holds up. Definitely a must read.
