Wow. Only a Russian could write something so deep, dark and hopeless, twisting your guts in an iron fist. The ending felt like a punch to the gut. Often I felt the language was twitchy and unclear, some word choices not as smooth as they could have been but I'm going to attribute that to the translation and not to the writer. The stations all generally blended together, none of the characters particularly stood out but the premise on its own was enough to make me interested. Some things felt too much like an info-dump that the book could have done without and weren't necessary to the central plot (Artjom's journey) but never did I particularly feel like I was bored.
Artjom was both weak and strong, a boy and a beast all in one, who both made things happen and let things happen to him. I need some time to think about if he was a good protagonist or not lmao. All in all, I was entertained and this is definitely a book that will stay with me for a long time even if it did bother me that some of my questions were never answered.

Now off to find the games made from this...

I‘m really into post-apocalyptic stories so it’s actually no surprise that I liked this one. It’s the first book in a trilogy and that’s exactly how it felt like as there was massive focus on worldbuilding (that got me confused a lot) instead of focus on the characters and their development. Still my head switched to „cinema mode“ pretty fast and I enjoyed exploring the dark tunnels of Moscau’s metro.

Well written but heavy and depressing.

God that was depressing. It felt like reading The Road again. But the amazing world building was so worth the now severe existential angst I’ll be dealing with for the next month

This book started off as a standard "quest" style story, in which a young guy heads off to face danger to save his village. In some ways, it is kind of a standard story in a really interesting setting. However, I think that it is well worth the time to read it, and there are certainly unexpected elements that make it stand out.

Very intriguing concept and setting, which spurred me on. However, I found the dialogue clunky and my edition had so many errors and duplicated words, probably the worst edited book I've read. I wonder if it's down to the translation and maybe in Russian it's better.

Still, I am intrigued to find out more about the world so I will read the sequel, but I'm in no rush to and will definitely be reading something else in between
