A surprisingly helpful little guide, this book has made me really stop and consider sentences for what they are: the units via which writers impart meaning. It sounds obvious, but until you get as in-depth an analysis of various sentences, it's hard to realize just how key that is to good writing. I might come back to this book again later, as it was a lot to take in during one read.

Little bit over-wrought, but a good celebration of fantastic sentences. While eschewing the content of sentences makes sense, the content that great sentences sit within do add to their overall effectiveness, and so should not be excluded. Breaks down types of sentences well, and makes it clear to the reader how to start formulating their own (the optmal word there being 'formulate' as in 'formulaic').

I enjoyed the parts of this book when the author analyzed specific sentences for their structure and how that affects the meaning. But the rest was not incredibly engaging.

I bought this after hearing an NPR interview with the author. Most of what I found to be interesting about the book was covered in the interview.

I'm not quite sure who the target audience for the book is ... the first half is indeed about sentence construction, and the last couple of chapters give some examples. Some of the examples were interesting though.

More interesting than re-reading Strunk and White.

Snobbish, pedantic, berates writing instructors and books for something and then precedes to do the exact same thing.

Some writers just like to hear themselves write.

Worth skimming to glean the useful nuggets, but becomes very repetitive down the stretch.
