This book was very confusing trying to keep up with all the characters. I found it somewhat interesting since it is historical fiction, but the stories dragged on too much for me. I do not think I will continue on with this series. Glad I didn't buy the first 3 books set on Kindle.

There is a singular strand running through history, always renewing itself, that of fanatics for the general good and for the written law. Logical to the point of inhumanity, pitiless towards others as towards themselves, these servants of abstract gods and of absolute law accept the role of executioners, because they wish to be the last executioner.

Man, it sucks how much I didn't like this book. It really, really sucks.

Because the history it's based on is absolutely FASCINATING. I know nothing about France's history. I have an enormous wealth of knowledge about Henry VIII's period of history, a decent amount of knowledge on his daughters, and a smidge about pre-Tudor England. I know even less about American history (oops), but a decent amount of history that involves Alexander Hamilton's ability to spit a verse.

What do I know about France's history? Um.

There was a chick named Joan.

So, yay, I have a reason to read up on French history! This series inspired GRRM to write ASOIAF, which despite the intense read, is captivating and fascinating. So, let's DO THIS.

Over two months later, and I was so happy to be done I almost cried.

The story itself is SO compelling. But the manner of story telling isn't. It isn't even that difficult to keep track of the characters, which is a massive problem with Game of Thrones. But the parts that were fun and interesting and kept your attention didn't last long enough.

I want to know more about Isabella, and the angry, angry little man Robert of Artois. I adore Tolomei, and his sneaky brilliance. I'm dying to see where the story of the three imprisoned women is going*. I was even intrigued by King Phillip.

But the story telling is just. not. interesting. And that's the most frustrating thing in the world.

If I can ever get my hands on the audiobook version of this series, I'll continue it. But there's no way I'm going to sit and try to read the rest of this. My eyeballs may fall out in bored protest.

* Even though throughout, I kept looking these people up on Wikipedia, so I totally know what happens, I just want to see the fictional aspect.
