The reviews are not kidding. This book is an exhaustive tour de force taking you through the bowels of a modern bureaucracy. I loved this and am so pleased I read it. That said this was a gargantuan effort and finishing it so quickly has exhausted me. I feel like I have gone on a long journey. The translation is wonderful and the features of the life, times, and culture of Japan heavily shape the novel. Pivotal conversations take place with characters facing away from one another. This is not for everyone do try to read a sample first.
Olipa merkillinen kirja. Tavallaan todella tyydyttävä, tavallaan äärettömän pitkäveteinen. Tässä oli ihan omanlainen ja ainutlaatuinen tunnelmansa, josta en osaa päättää pidinkö vai enkö.

Great story, well told, and unlike any book I have ever read. I'm not a big crime thriller/police procedural type, but something tells me that this book is an outlier even in that genre. Yokoyama doesn't waste a lot of time with poetic or belabored descriptions of setting. Almost the entire book is devoted to the thoughts and reactions of the narrator (a lot of it devoted to seemingly banal office politics), and yet it was a vivid story. I don't know how to explain it or summarize it better--it was just really fun to read (though I may have a perverse definition of "fun").
This book is literally a police procedural novel, in that it deals with how the police department operates. If you’re looking for a crime novel, this is not for you.
