holy smokes. i really liked this book
adventurous dark mysterious tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Plot masterfully unspools. However, by the end, I realized I did not really want to be reading 600 pages of detective crime fiction with no character development.

Too long yet I kept going. Something compulsive about this book yet nothing much happens.

Turgid, pointless verbose exploration of police politics - the writing style is ok but seriously in want of a decent narrative. One star rating is one star too many.

Tossing in the towel. I have no strong opinion about this.

I just am realizing I hate books about cops. I just can't seem to care about all this cop drama.

DNF at page 439/566. I finished the end via a book summary. This was too long for a meh twist and some of the major plot points weren’t given reasonable resolutions.

I am a little mystified by those who found this book a sensational thrill. I was willing to go along for a much slower ride than expected, and the twist at the end was fine, but at no point did I find myself really caring much about...anything, honestly. Way more plodding internal monologues than I needed, with more focus on the drama of police officers politics than kidnapped kiddos, it seemed.
